我们来看这句句子：After all of the committee members have approved the thesis, the oral defense will be officially scheduled by the Graduate Office。
等到所有的委员会成员都通过了遥(审核)，研究生办公室将会安排正式的答辩日期。
从上面的句子中我们可以看到，遥答辩就是(thesis) oral defense。
有时候也会用Viva-voce来表示，但是多数情况下Viva-voce只针对博士生遥答辩。
遥答辩委员会是 Thesis Defense Committee。
比如说硕士遥答辩委员会便是Thesis Defense Committee for Master Degree。
遥便是thesis，也有用Dissertation来表示遥的，但是一般来说，国外对于博士学位的遥才用Dissertation。
其他学位学术遥都用Thesis。
遥导师则是Supervisor。
