TEXT:Eight fast-growing wildfires in Colorado are burning out of control.
One of these is threatening a popular summer campground beneath Pikes Peak, whose vistas helped inspire the patriotic tune America the Beautiful.
The blaze in the Pike National Forest, known as the Waldo Canyon Fire, is only two miles from the base of the 14,115 foot peak - billed as the most visited mountain in North America.
Colorado governor John Hickenlooper said wildfires can be extremely difficult to beat.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) COLORADO GOVERNOR JOHN HICKENLOOPER SAYING: The problem can be that the fire can smoulder in the trunk of a tree for a day, two days, up to five or six days and then with a strong wind, burst into flames.
So it's challenging.
The Waldo Canyon Fire has consumed about 2,500 acres since Saturday and triggered evacuation orders for 11,000 people from Colorado Springs and nearby towns.

TEXT:Six Swedes are about to embark on a special journey - sailing in a novel device called the wind wagon.
Used by 19th Century immigrants to travel through the vast plains of America, this wind wagon will retrace one of their paths.
Henrik Wallgren is part of the team who built the machine from scratch.
He says that its first test drive in Angelholm, Sweden was a success.
Swedish Artist Henrik Wallgren, saying (English) That it's possible to sail a really big vessel on land like this.
It's crazy, it's beautiful, it's almost surreal that it actually works.
The plan is to sail across the salt flats of Nevada - a 500 kilometer or 300 mile journey through scorching heat.
Another challenge is the desert winds.
SOUNDBITE: Swedish Artist Henrik Wallgren, saying (English) It can go from zero to lots of wind in a really short time.
And you've got twisters in this area, in the Black Rock desert you've got lots of twisters.
The team will roll out in August this year.

And he has a lot to celebrate.
Among his list of achievements is being the first future British monarch to attend Eton College, an exclusive private school near London.
And with an honours degree from St Andrew's University, he's also the most academically accomplished British royal.
Born William Arthur Philip Louis on June 21st, 1982, he is the first child of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Over the years, he's attracted intense media attention, not least when at the age of 15 his famous mother died in a car accident in Paris.
In 2006, he graduated from Sandhurst military academy and spent two years training for his future role as head of the armed forces.
And four years later, he proposed to long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton, revealing his sense of humor when talking to the press about the couple's engagement.
Reporter: Prince William, why did it take you so long to propose?
SOUNDBITE: Prince William, saying (English): I don't remember how many years it has been, forget the memory, I also didn't realise it was a race otherwise I probably would have been a lot quicker.
The wedding breathed new life into the monarchy, attracting a worldwide audience of 2 billion people.
Prince William has piloted helicopters, raced canoes in Canada and mingled with celebrities in California.
And the next 30 years may well see him ascend the British throne.

5 magnitude earthquake in southwest China.
The quake along the border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces killed at least four people and injured more than 100 others on Sunday.
Around 20 people were seriously injured.
The quake also damaged some 4,200 homes and cut off water supplies and transport services in the surrounding area.
State media said a fund has been set up and that 1,300 rescue workers are on their way to help victims.
