玩手机不是play the phone？一个介词搞定！play是一个“有遥”的英文单词。
很多时候，把中文语境中的“玩”直译成“play”都是不对的。
比如“玩手机”，就不能说成play the phone，答案稍后公布，我们先看看play这个词到底怎么用。

可以表示“玩耍”、“扮演”、“作弄”、“演奏”、“参与”、“下棋”、“播放”、“起作用”.

不管怎样，play较基本的含义还是“玩”。
但你要注意，当play表示“玩”的时候，只表示“小孩子的玩耍”，词典中有明确的标注：记得以前我的英文老师是这样来总结play的用法：Children play, but adults never play.
如今想想这句话还是很有洞察力的。
你可以说：Kids are playing with each other happily.
当主语是成年人的时候，play就跟“愉快地玩耍”没啥关系了，而表示“带有某种目的去参与活动”。
比如：play cards play football play the piano play music play games play a role 这些搭配都是很地道的。
而当动词短语play with的主语是成年人的时候，该短语就变成了带有负面含义的意思，表示“玩弄”，造句：She likes to play with people’s emotions.
她喜欢玩弄别人的感情。
我们再回到本文的标题：“玩手机”的到底该如何表达？
刚刚我罗列了play的种种宾语，可以是球类、乐器、角遥、音乐、影片、游戏.

但phone ① “玩手机”其实就相当于“花费时间在手机上”，英文可以说成：spend time on one’s phone，我们造一个句子：Today's young people spend too much time on their phones.
遥的年轻人花太多时间玩手机。
② 我们还可以将“玩手机”转化为“盯着手机”，即“look at one’s phones”，造句：While on the subway, I find many people looking at their phones.
当我坐地铁时，总看到不少人低着头玩手机。
③ 如果某人“玩手机”玩得很入神，我们可以用这个短语：immerse oneself in She immerses herself in the novel on her phone.
她痴迷地阅读着手机里的小说。
④ 再教给大家一个更形象生动的短语：be glued to These so-called phubbers are glued to their smartphones on the way home and at home.
这些所谓的“低头族”在回家途中及回家后都粘在他们的智能手机前。
⑤ 或者用一个介词就够了：on。
我较近刷到一条老外做的短遥，她说到她老公抱怨她不干活一天到晚只知道玩手机，她老公原话是：You are always on your phone.
你怎么总玩手机啊。
这里的on one's phone表示一个非常宽泛的概念，可以表示打电话、刷微博、朋友圈、看文章、打游戏、刷抖音等动作.

别人问你在干什么呢？
你如果在玩手机，可以说：I'm on my phone.
如果非得用上play，那么play后面也得跟上这个介词on，play on the phone表示“玩手机”也是可以的。
较后提醒一点，英文中的play跟中文里的“玩”不能遥划等号。
要注意惯用搭配，不能随意组合，否则可能会有歧义。
