Kipling was born in India of English parents.
After his education in England, he returned to India to begin his career as a journalist and editor.
On his return to London in 1889 he became a full time writer, but he travelled widely, including visits to South Africa during the Boer War.
British Imperialism is a key theme of much of Kipling's work.
He also wrote many books about soldiers and school.
In 1907 he became the first British writer to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
